In 2022, as a second-year student pursuing a degree in Justice and Peace, I embarked on a transformative journey with the Harmony Institute. Nestled in the serene suburbs of Lavington, Harmony Institute is an interfaith organization dedicated to promoting peace and unity through the harmonious interactions of diverse faiths and cultures. This internship marked my first professional experience, immersing me in a new realm of justice and peace, while also introducing me to the rich cultural tapestry of the Turkish community.
My first attachment at Harmony Institute spanned three months, a period brimming with novel experiences and profound learning. From the outset, the environment at Harmony was calming and conducive to introspection. The lush, tranquil surroundings and the delightful Turkish cuisine, especially their exquisite tea, added a unique flavor to my daily routine.
As an intern, my responsibilities were diverse and intellectually stimulating. I was tasked with writing articles, reviewing books, attending and organizing events, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in interfaith and intercultural dialogue. Each day presented new opportunities to learn and grow, whether through drafting thoughtful articles, critiquing insightful books, or participating in enriching discussions on various topics. These tasks honed my skills in research, writing, and critical thinking, providing a solid foundation for my future career.
One of the most enriching aspects of my internship was the interfaith and intercultural dialogue sessions. These gatherings, held every Wednesday, brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds to discuss various cultural and religious topics. I had the privilege of interacting with women from the Turkish community, learning about their traditions, and sharing my own cultural experiences. These dialogues were not just educational; they fostered a deep sense of unity and mutual respect.
In addition to these sessions, I visited schools and engaged with students from different faiths, learning about their beliefs and practices. This exposure to diverse religious perspectives was enlightening and reinforced the importance of finding common ground to promote harmony and peace.
In 2023, I returned to Harmony Institute for my practical training, this time together with my Ian by fellow student, and the project officer Harun. Our workdays were filled with meaningful engagements and impactful conversations. We discussed various issues affecting our communities and explored ways to address them through dialogue and cooperation.
Under the mentorship of Mr. Mustafa, I delved deeper into the world of interfaith peacebuilding. He guided me through different schools of thought and exposed me to a wealth of knowledge through extensive reading. His mentorship was invaluable, helping me refine my analytical skills and broaden my understanding of justice and peace. One of the highlights of this period was having one of my book reviews published, a testament to the growth and development I experienced at Harmony. Attending numerous workshops and seminars further expanded my professional network and provided insights into the practical aspects of my career.
My time at Harmony Institute was a period of immense personal and professional growth. It was my first foray into the world of justice and peace, providing me with a platform to learn, network, and develop crucial skills. The relationships I built and the knowledge I gained have been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory.
I am particularly grateful to Mr. Mustafa, whose kindness and guidance have left a lasting impact on my life. His mentorship not only helped me navigate my career but also instilled in me a deeper appreciation for the power of interfaith dialogue in promoting peace.
Harmony Institute will always hold a special place in my heart. It was here that I took my first steps into the professional world, learning about justice, peace, and the importance of cultural and religious unity. The experiences and lessons from my internship continue to influence my career and personal life, and I remain forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a transformative journey.
Harmony Institute is more than just a workplace; it is a beacon of hope, showing how peace and unity can be achieved through understanding and cooperation. I wish Harmony and its dedicated team continued success in their noble mission of promoting Peace, well-being, and harmony through the interaction of people in the society.
